Reclaimed cargo planks from YCI Reclaimed Hardwood are rough sanded down to 80 grit before they are removed from the trailer. We take it down enough to reveal the natural beauty of the wood grain without removing all of the character from use. This saves our customers valuable time on their projects. Each vintage reclaimed cargo plank is removed by hand and cut into manageable 8, 10, or 12 foot lengths. If you need longer planks we can cut to size up to 45’ long. We highly recommend longer lengths for customers who want a seamless bar top or conference table. All of the original hardware used to secure the cargo planks to the frame of its trailer is included upon request.

Every floor we remove is a little bit different depending on that specific trailer’s use. Your project will be a unique one-of-a-kind piece! Depending on the function of your project and personal taste, you can choose from very rough surfaces to a smooth surface. The majority of our customers prefer to use the work side of the plank that wears the test of time from daily use. However, the underside of the planking, also called the roadside, is a great alternative. The underside tends to be much smoother and will have a 2” rust mark where it was originally secured to the frame of the trailer.

We may also have the VIN plate of the trailer as well. The VIN plate includes the history of the trailer and usually includes information such as manufacturing date, serial number, manufacturer name, etc. We try to include the VIN plates with larger orders. Just ask about availability if you’re interested. VIN plates enhance the story each piece of our reclaimed wood has to tell.

Raw Planks

All hardware used to secure the reclaimed semi-trailer flooring to the frame is included with your order. We may also have the VIN plate which has the history from the trailer and usually includes information about the history of the wood. It’s nice to have a story to go with your project. Our reclaimed semi-trailer flooring is often grouped into the same category as barn wood. Since barn wood is usually used only for the walls of a barn, it isn’t as thick and is typically made from whatever material was readily available at the time. Semi-trailer flooring was built to withstand being driven over with heavy machinery daily and carrying heavy loads of cargo for thousands of miles. Due to the nature of its original function, semi-trailer flooring is a much more durable material. This translates into a much sturdier end product. The downside to the durability of our wood is the weight — while every trailer is different, we usually use 5.5 lbs. per square foot as a rule of thumb. Please consider that for your product.

Working with Product

Once you’ve made your purchase and are ready to begin working with your wood, there are a few things to consider. If you plan on milling the surface of the wood, our expert team recommends a belt sander. A palm sander will also work, but is much more time-consuming with large projects. We don’t recommend using a plainer as reclaimed wood will occasionally have a nail or two in it and can ruin your blade. If you plan to use the bolts provided, all you need is a dab of wood glue on the threaded end. Most people insert bolts prior to applying their finish. If your project is going to be outdoors or exposed to water, you will need to make sure it’s sealed well. Standing water will delaminate the planks over time. Many people confuse cargo planks with box car or railcar flooring. Box car flooring is 2 ½” thick, whereas cargo planks are 1 ¼” thick. Railcar flooring is also much more expensive — usually $30 per square foot raw. If you want your project to have a similar look, it’s easy to make a faux edge. Just buy one extra piece and you can double the thickness around the perimeter of the table. Cargo planks have a shiplap joint that can be turned into a tongue or groove joint when doubled up. See pictures for reference. This also cuts down on the weight of your table or bar.
